The project moves away from the understanding of architecture as an isolated object to assert, above all, its vocation for city-making and stitching together the urban fabric of the surrounding neighborhoods. The design is articulated along a major axis that organizes and brings coherence to the inherent complexity of the Hospital, the college areas, and the research and innovation spaces.
The complex is conceived through a deep integration with its context, seeking a serene and harmonious dialogue with the landscape, the Martí i Julià Healthcare Park, and the Santa Caterina Hospital. Given its large scale, the project seeks to minimize its footprint in order to maximize the outdoor spaces on the plot, thereby optimizing circulation flows for both users and professionals.
The new campus extends across the land between the towns of Salt and Girona, from east to west, aligning with the green corridors that define the avenues.
The hospital block will become the centerpiece of the campus, matching the size of the Hospital de Santa Caterina to face it directly. This block is structured into functional sections traversed longitudinally by a major circulation axis.
The ambulatory care building is situated on the eastern side of the site, strategically located near the urban centers of Salt and Girona. Placing this building on the east reinforces the aim of optimizing user accessibility to the building, as it concentrates most of the movement linked to the Campus’s healthcare services.
To the west, in relation to the future business hub, the University (UdG) building is situated to facilitate and encourage the exchange of ideas and the creation of synergies between the two buildings, while also promoting pedestrian mobility. Placing the Hub and the University in the west reinforces the project’s goal of locating these functions in close proximity and in a compact layout, integrating the existing educational building (UdG University School of Health and Sport and College of New Technologies).
